In the surroundings of the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria de la Popa we will find the old ruins of a Spanish military hospital of the 18th century. A perfect place to enjoy the sunset since it is set up above a hill Northern from the city’s old town.
The first shrine was raised in 1716 dedicated to the Popa Virgin with a facade influenced by the Baroque style, which makes it majestic. Between 1730 and 1740 it was built an adjoining hospital to the Shrine which gave medical care to people with few resources. It was in 1812 when a cyclone cause important damages in the church and it went under a huge restoration, acquiring its current look.
The temple was finally closed in the 80s because of the structural damage it had.
