The Plaza Mayor of Trinidad is located in the center of the historical center of the colonial jewel of Cuba. It has been key in the Trinidadian life since the foundation of the city in 1514, being its central point. The main and most beautiful buildings have been built around it.

In its origins it was called Plaza de la Iglesia (Plaza of the Church), since it was part of the Parroquia Mayor(Main Parish). Over the years it has been changing its shape and name. It was in the middle of the 19th century when it reached its present appearance thanks to the prosperity of the sugar production enjoyed by Trinidad. For this reason, when you walk around this square you will feel as if you were going back in time.

This plaza is an ode to the colonial Caribbean spirit, giving off warmth and life with its varied colors, among which yellow stands out. Two greyhounds cast in marble and a few palm trees guard the way to the heart of the square, where the Greek muse of dancing Terpsichore, sculpted in marble, rests on a pedestal. Surrounding it are four rectangular gardens, surrounded by white gates imported from Philadelphia.

From the center of the plaza you can marvel at each of the elegant mansions that surround it. Take a walk around and admire the great neoclassical façade that is part of the exuberant Iglesia Mayor Santísima Trinidad(Church) . Or head to the bell tower of the Convento de San Francisco de Asís (now the Museo Nacional de la Lucha Contra los Bandidos(National Museum), where you can take a beautiful snapshot of the picturesque city and surrounding countryside. There are also many other places of interest located nearby, such as the Museo Romántico (Museum) or the Palacio Ortíz (now the art gallery).
