To drive along a pedraplén (causeway) is an incredible experience, especially the longest one in the world, going from Caibarién to Santa María Cay, Cuba, around 48 kilometers along which you’ll have the feeling of driving over the sea. When the sea is calm there are no waves and the sky is mirrored on the water’s surface, giving the impression that the horizon has disappeared and that you’re driving across a flat world.
It is considered the largest causeway in the world and through it is possible gain direct access to kilometers of amazing, untouched beaches of golden sand and crystalline waters. Among them are Playa Las Brujas Beach, Playa Ensenachos Beach, Playa Las Salinas Beach, Playa Perla Blanca Beach, Playa Santa María Beach and Playa Mégano Beach. In the vicinity of El Pedraplén you’ll find lush vegetation and amazing landscapes.
To protect the area’s flora and fauna 45 preassembled concrete bridges were set up. El Pedraplén of Caibarién to Cayo Santa María was awarded the 7th “Premio Internacional Puente de Alcántara” (International Puente de Alcántara Award). This award recognizes the public building with greatest cultural, technological, aesthetic, functional and social relevance in Latin America, also taking into account the technical and esthetic quality.
