Two kilometers to the west of Vidal Park of Santa Clara, in Desfiles Avenue, quite close to the Viazul bus station, is the huge Plaza Che Guevara with a bronze statue of the major, known simply as the Monumento a Ernesto Che Guevara (Ernesto Che Guevara Monument).
The statue was erected in 1987 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the assassination of Che in Bolivia, and which can be seen any time of the day. Behind the statue is the sublime mausoleum, with 38 niches carved in stone as a homage to the guerrillas who died during the Bolivian Revolution. In 1997 the human remains of 17 fighters were found, including Guevara, in a secret mass grave in Bolivia, which were later put into the mausoleum. On October 17th of the same year Fidel Castro lit the Eternal Flame. The museum also houses several objects from the life and death of Ernesto Che Guevara.
In 2011 it received the Provincial Conservation Award by the Provincial Center of Cultural Heritage, with the patronage of the Cultural Heritage Committee of the National Union of Architects and Construction Engineers of Cuba (UNAICC in Spanish).
One of the best ways to reach this square is by a 30-minute walk. Although you can also take a horse and carriage from Calle Marta Abreu, facing the cathedral, for around two Cuban pesos.
