The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje Church was the third to be built in Santa Clara, Cuba. Established in 1707 and built between 1713 and 1719 from wood and guano (product from the balsa tree). Twenty-four years later it was reconstructed with stonework and roof tiles, with cooperation from Diego Fleites, José Rodríguez and José Santiago.
Throughout the 20th century, it was refurbished several times. During the first refurbishment, they added a nave to the side of the building to use it as a school for children, and also some remodeling, opening it back up to the public again in 1941. The second remodeling included a bell-tower, which is still there, and in 1950 a dome was added.
