The Catedral de Santa Clara (Santa Clara Cathedral) is located two blocks to the west of Plaza Che Guevara Square, in Calle Marta Abreu.
It was built in 1923, amidst great controversy due to the demolition of the original Santa Clara Church in Vidal Park.
It has wonderful stained glass windows and a legendary statue of the Virgin Mary, also known by the locals as Virgen de La Charca. This statue mysteriously disappeared shortly after the consecration of the cathedral in 1954, and rediscovered three decades later in a canal. In 1995, the “Virgen de La Charca” returned to its original position in the cathedral.
