Loma del Capiro Hill was a key spot in the Battle of Santa Clara and for the victory of the rebel army in the liberating war of 1959. Che Guevara and his men made important decisions in taking this strategic position where an ensemble of troops from the Tren Blindado (Armored Train) were found in a trench on the southern hillside. Despite the clear disadvantage in number of soldiers, the Cuban Revolution was won.
On top of the hill there is a monument representing the defense of the homeland, sculpted by José Delarra in 1988. This area, next to the Tren Blindado, was declared National Monument of the Republic of Cuba in January 1990.
Here is where the first religious statue outside a temple in Cuba is located. It is a monument in honor of Pope John Paul II, in memory of his visit to the city in 1998. On the hills is the Capiro Nature Park Project, a recreational park deeply connected to nature, in contrast to the city of Santa Clara.
