The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen Church, five blocks to the north of Leoncio Vidal Park, in Plaza del Carmen, is the oldest church in the city of Santa Clara, built in 1748. In 1846 a tower was added to it.
During the War of Independence it worked as a prison for Cuban patriots.
In front of the church there is a cylindrical monument commemorating the place where several families from Remedios founded Santa Clara on July 15th 1689. There are various plaques, busts and monuments in the park honoring relevant events, one in particular being dedicated to El Vaquerito, a Cuban guerrilla from the Cuban Revolution.
