The Monumento a la Toma del Tren Blindado (Toma del Tren Blindado Monument) is found to the east of Vidal Park where a very important event took place during the Battle of Santa Clara, when Ernesto Che Guevara and a group of young revolutionaries derailed an armored train with a borrowed digger and homemade molotov cocktails. This brought an end to the Batista dictatorship and the beginning of the socialist regime of Fidel Castro.
This event is commemorated with a museum of freight cars on the other side of the river, marking the place where the train derailed and 350 armed soldiers were tossed over. The famous digger is also memorialised there.
Some blocks to the east of the Tren Blindado, the “Che con Niño” statue shows Che Guevara holding a baby, symbolizing the following generation.
