Teatro La Caridad (La Caridad Theater) is no doubt one of the most important cultural squares in Santa Clara and all of Cuba. It is located in Vidal Park, between Calle Máximo Gómez and Calle Lorda, and has been visited by internationally famous figures.
This architectural jewel was opened on September 8th, 1885. It was financed and donated by Marta Abreu, from an illustrious and rich family in the area, to the city of Santa Clara so that its proceeds would help those in need.
Dr. Don Luis Estévez, husband of Marta Abreu, suggested its construction to the council of Santa Clara in 1883. The theater was erected over the former Ermita de La Candelaria Shrine, the first temple in the area. Before being demolished it was a quarter and telegraph office. The impression left by the shrine can be seen in the overall aesthetics of the modern building.
