In the northern coast of the province of Villa Clara, Cuba, you will find hundreds of small and beautiful, idyllic cayos (keys), better known as the Cayerías del Norte (Northern Cay Group), which are connected to Caibarién by El Pedraplén (the causeway). It is a sort of labyrinth where sea and land combine to create a network of canals and islets. They are a great tourist attraction of Cuba and contain several resorts, mostly located in the three largest keys: Las Brujas Cay, Ensenachos Cay and Santa María Cay.
The most relevant areas are connected by an amazing overpass known as El Pedraplén, crossing Buenavista Bay from Caibarién, and 45 bridges on its walkway. The bridges were added around 1990 to facilitate the exchange of waters after a study concerning an old landfill showed environmental damages.
The tourist development in the keys has taken place little by little, protecting more than 200 flora species and adding some areas from Buenavista which were declared Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The Cuban government has wisely marked out relevant areas such as protected flora and fauna reserves. All these measures have allowed the Northern Cay Group to preserve the pure character of its beautiful beaches.
