Located on the neighbourhood of Santo Tomás, the Casa-Natal de Antonio Maceo Birth House Museum is the place where it was born the Major General Antonio Maceo, who fought for the independence of the country, dying in combat in 1896.
The house was built at the beginning of the 19th century, where lived the former slave of the family Muchulí Hernández, Juana Bautista Hernández. Later on, the building was bought by the soldier’s family as second residence since they live in Majaguabo, San Luís were they cultivated coffee, tobacco and minor fruits.
In 1871, it was seized by the Spanish authorities due to the implication of the family in the war and, although the siege should have been cancelled by law in 1873, the colonial government kept the affected properties. The house was recovered in 1876 by Mariana Grajales, mother of the Major General.
Inside the house, you can admire numbered objects belonging to the family of Maceo Grajales among which you can find furniture, silverware and other articles of personal use. In the MIlitary Room, you will learn about the life of Antonio Macedo from its incorporation in 1868 to his death, where you can see a wallet for documents, binoculars and a billfold. Furthermore, you will find one of the flags of the invasion, a telegraphic key and a printing press, along with a series of letters and other documents.
