The cemetery of Santa Ifigenia was opened in February 1868. It has hosted the mortal remains of Santiago inhabitants for quite a century and a half, including well known personalities such as José Martí, José Maceo, Mariana Grajales, Frank Country and Josué País, among many other notables.
You can visit the José Martí Mausoleum, where it is said that his ashes rest on a handful of soil from each country of America. It is built with an hexagonal shape and in each side, a window gives way to the sun, thus finds a way to illuminate the tomb throughout the day.
The cemetery was declared a National Monument in 1979 due to the historical, architectural and cultural precious legacy that it keeps within its walls. During a quiet stroll through the streets of the cemetery, you can see numerous examples of exquisite funerary architecture among the graves of thousands of people from Santiago.
Every half hour, you can see the guard changing performed by selected soldiers that have been trained for this conscription.
