The Monument to Cimarrón was erected to honor the revolt of miner copper slaves from the 17th century. SItuated in the town of El Cobre, it can be seen from the Nuestra Señora del Cobre Basilica, and sculpted in iron and bronze by Alberto Lescay, erected on top of a hill next to the sanctuary.
Until some years ago, those who wished to visit the monument had to climb the hill, but they have recently built a staircase from where you’ll admire the amazing views witnesses of the revolts created by those looking for freedom.
Visit the monument during any time of the year, but if you go during the celebrations of Caribbean culture, you can’t miss the dances and rituals to honor their African roots.
