Formerly, the Plaza de Marte was used by soldiers as training camp and it was place of conspirations during the Revolution. Nowadays, it is a square which reminds with its name of the combative and fighting spirit of the inhabitants of the city.
In the center of the square, there is a column of 20 meters height, crowned with a phrygian cap as the ones worn by the French revolutionaries. Around it, a spacious park opens with huge colonnades, pergolas and lush trees which shade the plenty of benches to sit, rest and watch the pedestrians. The square counts with six garden which harmonize with the open areas and you can also see four big bronze cannons which protect the main column.
In the park there are represented in sculptures the heroes of the city of the Independence War, and you can also admire the busts of José Martí and Camilo Cienfuegos.
