Visit the Plaza de Dolores Square located in the very core of Santiago de Cuba, very near Heredia Street and the Nuestra Señora de la Asunción Cathedral.
This park, the second in importance in the city, dates from the early 17th century. Until 1776, it was the land entry for agrarian products, becoming later in a public market. In 1859, when the new Mercado de la Concha market was inaugurated, the Plaza de Dolores Square was no longer used as such.
After a series of refurbishments throughout history, the square ended up being a long and narrow park bordered with leafy trees and wooden benches on ceramics and concrete floors. It is a lovely place where you can sit and rest under the refreshing shade of the green vegetation.
You can see around the square some buildings with colonial, eclectic and rationalistic architectural features that transfer you to a time where Cuban society used to meet in parks to spend its leisure time. After a fire in 1970. the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores Church was converted into a hall of concerts and the Sinfónica Oriente Orchestra headquarters.
