The Cuartel Moncada Headquarters, also known as Ciudad Escolar 26th July School City, currently a building dedicated to teach, but in the middle of the 20th century it was a military headquarters.
This place as chosen by the guerrilleros on the 26th July 1953 to raise against the Fulgencio Batista’s regime and, although it was a failure, became the beginning of the Cuban revolution.
The building has quadrangular shape which measurements are of 180 meters at the front by 77 meters at the back, and hosted at the end of the 19th century the soldiers destined there, 200 prisoners and the needed employers for its maintenance. Being a military building, has always made it quite relevant in all military conflicts that took place in the city, by the most recent one was on the 8th January 1959 in which the guerrilla fighters of the 26th July Movement commanded by Raúl Castro took it for the Revolution.
Later on, in 1960 it was decided to turn it into a primary education scholar center with capacity for around 2,000 pupils as symbol of the strength in education.
Nowadays, you can visit eight rooms of the 26th July History Museum located inside the school’s enclosure.
