Built in the 16th century, the Balcón de Velázquez (Velázquez Balcony’s) main function was to watch the maritime traffic to avoid surprise attacks of the pirates and corsairs. The building was ordered by Hernando de Soto in 1539, but it wasn’t finished until 1550 due to the constant interruptions for fighting against the indian uprisings that needed both money and men destinated to the ravelin.
The place is a lovely destination for a visit to the city of Santiago de Cuba because of the beautiful views that can be watched from the viewpoint of the Velázquez Balcony. Although only some of the walls are the originals of the building, the current construction has integrated them and the effect is equally rewarding.
Nowadays, the city organizes some artistic and cultural activities in this place, this way, you can enjoy theater productions, musical performances or even any fashion show in this emblematic space.
Visit the former terrace of the viewpoint and admire the incredible landscape of Santiago de Cuba growing on the inland natural terraces from the very seashore.
