The Casa de la Obra Pía House, located on Calle Mercaderes Street, is one of the most important examples of domestic architecture in Old Havana. It is a typical Havana aristocratic residence built in 1648 and refurbished in 1780.
Its Baroque facade has clear influences from architecture in the south of Spain. Its intricate arcade was built in Cádiz and is crowned by the family crest.
This house also hosts one of the most monumental projects of the city: a sewing and embroidery cooperative, with a workshop and a small shop selling clothes and fabrics.
It is currently also used as a house-museum, exhibiting wonderful collections of pieces of great historical and artistic value. What stand out amongst these are decorative artistic objects, such as porcelains, paintings, glassware, tapestries, goldsmithing, and marble, bronze, alabaster or calamine sculptures.
The permanent exhibition Retorno a la semilla (Return to the Seed) is also shown. It pays tribute to Alejo Carpentier and Valmont, a Cuban novelist known for his work as a legacy of universal culture. Inside the room, French imperial furniture used by the Cuban Embassy in France is shown.
