The Museo de la Orfebrería (Goldsmithing Museum) is located in an old Colonial house where, after 1707, Gregorio Tabares lived and had his workshop. This house is in number 113 of Calle Obispo Street, in the heart of Old Havana.
On each of its two floors the museum exhibits valuable collections of artworks and items of daily use that bear witness to the development of Cuba, even though it has always lacked important precious metal deposits.
The first floor houses exhibition rooms dedicated to jewellery, clocks, numismatics and toilet articles; while the second floor houses weapons, canes, religious and lighting pieces, and dining room items.
It is worth noting the collection of items produced in Havana, belonging to Cuban families. Among them you’ll find jewels, writing desks, numismatic and religious art pieces, arms decorations, etc.
In the museum you’ll find works from the 19th century and first quarter of the 20th century, among other items from the 16th and 18th centuries due to their antiquity and beauty.
Currently, the Goldsmithing Museum is also the headquarters of the Plateros de San Eloy Congregation, gathering those who presently work in this particular vocation.
