Located at number 2 of Calle Compostela in Old Havana, behind the old Palacio Presidencial (Presidential Palace) and in front of the Loma del Angel, a charming place in the old part of the historical centre of Havana. The Iglesia del Santo Ángel Custodio (Church of the Holy Guardian) Angel was built in 1695, but did not have the category of church until 1788.
The original church was hit hard by a hurricane during 1846, so it was completely renovated in its current neo-Gothic style, which has little to do with the original. Both its history and its beauty make it unique. Built inside the old wall, it served to warn of the presence of pirates and corsairs in past centuries, as it has perfect views of the bay
It is striking that Felix Varela and José Martí were baptized here. It is also curious to know that this temple has been mentioned in Cecilia Valdés, a great 19th century Cuban novel by Cirilo Villaverde.
The temple currently has two towers in the shape of a spire and an atrium where centuries ago the church cemetery was located.
The entry doors are in the shape of pointed arches, and in its interior has three naves covered by barrel vault, as well as an ambulatory, the only church in Cuba to contain this feature.
