El Palacio de Marqués de Arcos (Palace of the Marquess of Arcos) is located next to the Palacio del Conde de Lombillo (Count of Lombillo’s Palace), in the Plaza de la Catedral (Cathedral Square) of Old Havana, in the island of Cuba.
The Palacio del Marqués de Arcos was built in 1741 by Ignacio de Peñalver y de Cárdenas, father of the first marquis of the dynasty, who was distinguished by his activity in favor of the Crown during the settlement and occupation of Cuba by the English army. It was precisely this that allowed him to obtain the marquisate in 1742.
This building has a baroque style with two facades. The main one is orientated towards the Calle de la Merced and presents two balconies of rich grid, arches of Doric columns, as well as a beautiful Italianizing stairs in his interior. The Casa del Marqués de Arcos is considered one of the gems of Cuban Baroque and one of the most important examples of 18th century residential architecture.
For some time it worked as a Post Office, it also housed the Artistic and Literary Lyceum. Today it is one of the best preserved palaces of Spanish colonial architecture on the island and houses the Taller Experimental de la Gráfica de La Habana (Havana Experimental Graphics Workshop), where artists (mainly Cubans) make silkscreen prints, etchings and lithographs. The works can be acquired at quite reasonable prices.
In addition, the Historian's Office of Havana has added several open spaces for the public to enjoy, such as a digital art room or a literary café.
