Plaza del Cristo Square is located on the western side of Old Havana, a bit further from the old city. It has also been restored by the Havana Historian’s Office.
It is worth visiting the 1732 Iglesia del Santo Cristo del Buen Viaje Church. It has recently been partly restored, and from it its stained glass windows and brightly colored ceiling stand out.
It is a place with many stories and legends about the sea, as the sailors, came to the Iglesia del Santo Cristo (Church of the Holy Christ) to ask for protection before leaving on their voyages or to pay homage to thank divine help in case they had already finished their journey.
The Plaza del Cristo is an ideal place if you want to get away from the tourist masses and see how daily Cuban life goes. It is a faithful reflection of Cuban traditionalism, as far as architecture is concerned, there are still many vestiges of another time, such as the colonial houses or small tobacco shops.
