The Museo Casa de Simón Bolívar (Simón Bolívar House Museum) is situated within an old Neoclassical palace dating back to between 1806 and 1817. It is located in 160 Calle Mercaderes Street, on the corner of Obrapía Street, right in front of the bronze statue of Latin America’s liberator, in Old Havana.
This museum in honor of Simón Bolívar was opened July 24th 1993, coinciding with the anniversary of his birth. Its purposes are, among others, the study and spreading of the Bolivarian way of thinking.
It has permanent exhibitions dealing with the history of the Bolivarian nation and its main figures of independence. It’s worth noting the Venezuelan Contemporary Acrylic collection donated by Venezuelan artists; the Polychromatic Baroque Collection, made up of 35 scenes made of polychromatic clay about the life of the Liberator; the Iconographic Collection, made up of by 41 photographs of original portraits of the Liberator throughout his life, painted by Feller Valois; and the Historical Objects Collection, a small but valuable collection of objects related to the Bolivar’s greatest achievements.
The museum also houses a great library with important book collections and Latin-American documents. In addition, due to the patrimonial importance of the building and the magnificent archaeological remains found during its restoration, a part of this excavation has been left uncovered where remains from the 17th century are displayed.
