The Convento de Santa Clara (Santa Clara Convent) is located in Calle Cuba Street, at the south of Plaza Vieja Square of Havana. This is the biggest and oldest convent in all of Cuba, built between 1638 and 1643. It was actually the first female convent in the city.
The temple stopped serving for religious purposes in 1920, housing for some time the Ministry of Public Works. It is currently part of the restoration team of Old Havana. With the exception of the church which is still undergoing renovation, the rest of the rooms have been remodelled and preserved giving them new life. In the building is the headquarters of the Centro Nacional de Restauración, Conservación y Museología (National Center for Restoration, Conservation and Museology), which has several workshops for the rescue of artistic works.
Visits are allowed here, it being recommended to visit the Colonial-style interior patio, where the first public fountain of the city was found; the cloister, the cells of the nuns and the small cemetery. It has a wonderful open-air setting, in what used to be an orchard, as well as abundant vegetation in the cloister, and long galleries. Although the austerity of its construction makes it a simple construction, the passage of time has made it an architectural delight.
It is even possible to spend the night in one of its cells for a reasonable price in parts that have been converted into something of an inn.
